Carrefour doesn't trust their customer
Way, way back in my old blog in Blogger did I write about Carrefour already. Carrefour has the habit to stop customers with plastic bags at the entrance and wants to close their bags with either a plastic string or put their bags into one from Carrefour.
I don't like it. For me, this shows that they don't trust their customers. This shows to me that basically they believe that any of their customer is a potential thieve.
Normally I sneak in aside of the guards. But today, I knew it is my turn to be controlled by the guards. Besides the one who is busy packing the plastic bags, a guard was standing just in front of the entrance. I tried to get through, and smiled at the boy who asked me for the bag, saying, no thanks, don't need. But I turned around to wait for wife and kid, and the guard at the entrance came after me, asking me in a friendly, but demanding voice to close the back. I told him that I don't want, that I don't steal, and if I would look like a thieve? (How does a thieve look like?). He said, "no thieve", and showed me the string that he would tie around the plastic bag. I said, "no way really. What is it about Carrefour, don't say trust their customer? I am no a thieve and I really don't want that." He than gave up and let me in. I mean, it is not his fault, the guards are just doing their jobs.
But I don't like to be treated like this. There are thefts in the stores, of course. The problem is only that every customer with a plastic bag is suspicious to Carrefour. Collective punishment!

Yeah, hate it when they (Carrefour) insist on tying my plastic bags that has magazines in them. And at Mydin, the guard insisted on putting my handbag in a plastic bag and tying it up before let me into the store!!

Er, not to mention Mydin. Hehe. Last time I went to Jalan Silang, there was a looonngg queue of customers who have to deposit their stuff b4 entering the premise.
How "cool" is that?

The trick is this: you overload their security system by not bringing one or two bags, but by pushing in a trolley-load of six or seven bags. We did that the other day and ended up only getting one plastic bag tagged with a Carrefour sticker. Obviously that makes more sense to security than to waste time and create a queue by "plastic-bagging" all the bags.
Go figure.

I don't like being treated that way by Carrefour either but at the same time I do appreciate their concern for theft.
In contrast, how do you feel about Movenpick's strategy to counter the same theft issue? Frankly, I feel worse at Movenpick (@ the curve) where you can only go in and out thru' 2-foot "turnstiles".
Went there once to see what the hullabaloo was about & came out not impressed. I felt like a prisoner, literally. First we had to line up to get in; then we had to line up to get our food, which I didn't think was worth the prices charged.

Over here in Penang, Carrefour is tolerable but Makro? Die lah, no plastic bag to pack their things. Then, we need to be checked by the guard as we exited. And imagine carrying one single bra through their carpark? Die, Makro, die.

Carrefour's policy is tolerable. Some Giant hypermarkets' are less reasonable. You have to deposit all the bags you are carrying, except your handbag, with their staff before you are allowed to go in.
